Claim Being Checked
A short video circulating on social media shows Zambia’s Minister of Information and Media, Cornelius Mweetwa, appearing to be on a phone call. In the video, he seems to discuss an incident where ruling party Members of Parliament walked out when an opposition MP raised a motion about government measures to reduce the cost of living.
The video has been widely shared online, including by Mwebantu, a popular Zambian media outlet. This has led to speculation among some users, questioning whether the footage is authentic or a deepfake.
Verification
To verify the claim, Dikoding Deception analyzed the video and cross-checked it with the official broadcast on the Ministry of Information and Media’s Facebook page. The video is a clip from a press briefing held by Minister Mweetwa in Chipata, Eastern Province.
A comparison with the original broadcast confirms that the widely circulated video aligns with the minister’s actual speech and setting.
However, minor inconsistencies in voice synchronization and motion have raised suspicions.
Conclusion
Despite minor inconsistencies, the video is AUTHENTIC and not a deepfake.
